“Hello, my name is Doreen Karani and I am the Principal at the Isiolo School for the Deaf. Welcome to our school! We are very encouraged by your visit and hope you learn much about our students, teachers, the local Deaf community, and our vision for the future. Isiolo has a very challenging environment. Not only challenges with poverty and tribal conflict in the community, but also harsh landscape which affects the school through:
- water shortages
- illness during dust storms
- flash floods which leave school grounds impassable
- soil which shifts severely because of this weather, creating large cracks in building walls.
Yet more than the challenges, Isiolo is a very rewarding place. Our students come from many remote areas in Northern Kenya. They learn their first language, Kenyan Sign Language, when they arrive at school. They very much desire to be educated to the best of their abilities. The community in Isiolo has always supported the school and continues to pool resources to help improve the facilities.
This website is our small school. But we aspire to something better. We want to be a school which does BIG things for the Deaf in Northern Kenya. I hope you can help us find a way!
Asante Sana (Thank you very much),
Isiolo School for the Deaf
